OPULENT SHOWGIRL

Costume, make up, styling-Jess Campbell-Plover Photography-Jamie Beahan

The idea behind this project came from looking at costume and styling in music videos. I decided I wanted to create an outfit for the singer Brooke Candy as I love her over the top style. I decided to create a punk showgirl look as it fitted in with the imagery Brooke uses in her clothing and music videos. I wanted to make a feather headdress encrusted with jewels and spikes to portray her opulent style.

OLD HOLLYWOOD CLEOPATRA

My inspiration for this project was Ancient Egyptian imagery and Old Hollywood films that depicted the queen Cleopatra. I wanted to create a garment for theatre that embodied the extravagance of Ancient Egyptian artefacts and the glamour of 1920s-1960s film.

Here are some millinery pieces I have created inspired by circus and burlesque. Some are created from various pom poms stitched together with details nestled into them, such as bows and sequin stars. I have also created oversized bows out of a wire structure and also embellished buckram structures with sequins, feathers and beading.

CORSETRY

Corset, hair, make up and styling by Jessica Campbell-Plover Photography by Jamie Beahan

This corset was created by using a pattern that fitted to my personal measurements. I used a silver satin and a black polka dot mesh to make my corset from. The skills that go into creating a corset include backing outer fabric onto coutil, fitting the corset to the body, stitching in boning channels and inserting steel bones, inserting a busk, putting in eyelets and lacing, binding the edges and adding any trimmings.

TAILORING

Here I created half a woman’s bespoke tailored jacket. Tailoring a garment includes lots of hand sewing and traditional techniques. Some of these techniques are tailor tacking, pad stitching, moulding chest and collar canvas, binding edges, creating a jet pocket, shrinking and expanding wool with a steam iron, button hole stitching, inserting a shoulder roll and shoulder pad and lining the garment.
